He worked on ships sailing around Australia and was for many years the Chief Steward on the steamship Minderoo [225: 19-Oct-1929]

     By 1913 he was the owner of 1,255 acres of farmland in Carnamah, which became Victoria Locations 3332 and 3835 [3] [44]
     Also by 1913 his wife Florence was the owner of 1,476 acres of farmland in Carnamah, which was listed as care of himself [44]
     Their land had previously belonged to Mrs Isabella C. BRAIDWOOD and her son James R. BRAIDWOOD [44]
     By 1921 he was the owner of 2,251 acres of farmland in Carnamah and 2,370 acres of farmland in Three Springs [44]
     His 2,251 acres consisted of Victoria Locations 3331, 3332 and 3333 on the west side of the railway line near Prowaka Siding [44] [62]
In 1917 had 350 acres of wheat crop growing on his Carnamah farm [10: 19-Jun-1917]
Purchased some of his general supplies from PARKIN's general store "The Supply Stores" in Yarra Street, Carnamah in 1917 [92]

Following his death his Carnamah farmland remained in the name of his estate for a number of years [3]
996 acres of his Carnamah farmland, Victoria Location 3330, was sold to E. Henry H. HALL of Geraldton on 14 January 1936 [3]
During the 1939-40 financial year his remaining farmland in Carnamah and all of his wife's land was sold to E. Henry H. HALL [3]

Obituary - The Late Mr. G. A. Newman
"The funeral of the late Mr Gerard Auugstus Newman, late of Carnamah and Three Springs, took place in the Church of England Cemetery, Karrakatta, on Friday morning, October. 4. Deceased, who was born in Ceylon, had for the last 40 years been travelling round the coast of Australia, and is best remembered as the popular chief steward of the s.s. Minderoo for many years. Latterly he had been farming in the Carnamah and Three Springs districts, where he acquired a large number of friends. Many beautiful wreaths and floral tributes were received, besides the numerous telegrams and messages of sympathy sent to his sister, Mrs. F. Piesing, of 1121 Hay-street, West Perth. The chief mourners were Mrs. F. Pieslng (sister) and Mr. Fred W. Edema (nephew). The pall-bearers were Messrs. E. Potts. T. King, R. L. Dunman, V. Abbott, J. Hall and E. Hosking. Amongst those present were Messrs. A. W. Walker, H. A. W. Jones, Captain Richardson and many others. The Rev. A. T. Haining conducted the service at the graveside, and the funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Donald J. Chipper and Son."
