From The Irwin Index newspaper, Friday 26 April 1963:
Old Resident of District is Deceased
"The late Mr. Norman Saggers, who died at the North Midlands District Hospital at Three Springs last Saturday, was one of the oldest and most respected residents of the Mingenew region. He was 88 years of age and had suffered ill-health for a long period.
He was born at Jamieson in Victoria, where his father was a school teacher. That town is one of the most beautiful mountain resorts in that State, with trout streams and rivers set in dense forest of giant gums and tree ferns. One of a family of 14, Mr. Saggers and an elder brother came to Western Australia in 1894, when he was 19. He lived in this State from then on. During that period of 69 years, he resided in Cue, Yalgoo, Katanning and Tambellup before coming to the North Midlands. He spent a number of years in Three Springs and then moved to Mingenew, where he lived for 41 years, being one of the oldest residents of that district.
One of his main interests was working sheep dogs. Mr. Saggers was an honorary life member of the W.A. Working Sheep Dogs Association and had worked dogs in the first field trials conducted by that organisation. He won the Sandover Cup at one of those early trials. He also was a successful breeder and skilful trainer. His dogs were eagerly sought throughout that State, some being purchased by station owners far to the north and from others as far south as Red Lake and Esperance. Mr. Saggers was a member of the Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia for many years as well as the Mingenew Agricultural Society. He was patron of the Mingenew Bowling Club.
He is mourned by his widow, eight children and six step-children, 33 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. His children and stepchildren are:- Nita (Mrs. H. E. Thomas), Bill (Mr. N. W. Saggers, of Applecross), Arn (Mr. A. E. Saggers, Victoria Park), Myrtle (Mrs. R. Nettle, Kojonup), Vera (Mrs. H. Randall, Perth), Joe (Mr. J. Saggers, Victoria Park), Edie (Mrs. W. Gilbertson, Maylands), Gerald (Mr. G. H. Pearce, Brookton), Doreen (Mrs. R. Desmond, Tuart Hill), Linda (Mrs. H. J. Ralston, Claremont), Beryl (Mrs. D. Calaghan, Wembley), Shirley (Mrs. L. Looke, Mingenew) and Don (Mr. D. H. Pearce, Mt. Pleasant).
The funeral was at the Mingenew Cemetery last Monday afternoon and was attended by a large representation from throughout the district who gathered to pay their last tributes. The service at the graveside was conducted by the president of the Seventh-Day Adventist Perth Conference, Pastor F. Maberley. During the ceremony, Mr. H. J. Ralston and his elder daughter, Miss Janette Ralston, sang "Beyond the Sunset." The pallbearers were old friends and associates:- Messrs. B. Thomas, R. R. Colegate, P. F. Lynch, J. Connolly, F. Wick and E. C. Newton. The casket was carried by Messrs. M. J. Payne, L. Croft, L. Baugh and A. Wick. The many floral tributes covered the grave."
