On enlistment was described as 15 feet 9 inches tall, weighing 140 lbs. with blue eyes, brown hair and a fair complexion [30]
It was also noted under distinctive marks that he was missing his little toe from both his left and right foot [30]
Embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia for active service abroad on the Transport A7 Medic on 2 November 1914 [18]

In November and December 1916 his father and his brother Frank, also in the A.I.F., were both Killed in Action [30]

Owing to the circumstances of himself and his mother his request was approved however in the interim he had been hospitalised [30]
Following orders he was evacuated to England and subsequently returned to Australia in May 1917 [30]
