From The Geraldton Guardian newspaper, Thursday 3 November 1921:
Killed by a Falling Tree
"Inspector Simpson has received from Constable Kroschel, of Three Springs, a report of a fatal accident which occurred to a young man named Percy Edmund Hunt, who was employed by Mr. William Padbury, at Fairfield Farm, about
12 miles from Three Springs. It appears that on October 31 deceased and another man named William Ernest Long were engaged in cutting down some big salmon gum trees. The men were working about 100 yards apart. Long saw a tree at which Hunt was engaged fall, and a little while afterwards, not hearing the sound of his companion's axe, went to the spot. He found him lying under a gimlet
tree log, and, obtaining a horse from the cart, pulled the log off him, when he found his mate was dead. It's believed that when the salmon gum tree which Hunt had been felling came down it crashed against a gimlet tree a little distance away. This broke off about 30 feet from the ground, and the upper portion caught Hunt as it fell, killing him. Constable Kroschel, accompanied by Dr. McAleer, proceeded to the spot in a car belonging to Mr. N. J. Dunn, and the circumstances of the case were reported to the Coroner, Mr. Raymond Gee, at Geraldton, who decided that an inquest was unnecessary. Deceased, who was a returned soldier, came from England, his mother residing in Oxfordshire."
