Midland Railway Company correspondence reveals that by September 1915 he had disappeared [34]
Later in 1915, with the help of a detective, he was found working as a groom at a Mr FOY's stables in Beaufort Street, Perth [34]
Enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in Perth on 19 May 1916 [30: item 3018330]
Upon enlistment he was 5 feet 4½ inches tall, weighed 188 pounds and was of fair complexion with blue eyes and dark brown hair [30]
Gave his father as his next of kin, his father's address stated to be "C/- Mrs Woodhead, 44 Charing Cross, London, England" [30]
Embarked Fremantle, Western Australia for active service abroad on the H.M.A.T. A16 Port Melbourne on 30 October 1916 [30]

On 14 June 1917 he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for courageously preventing a shell from exploding [18]
His prevention of the shell exploding saved a number of his comrades lives and also a large quantity of shells [18]
Treated in England for a severe gunshot wound to his back before being returned to Australia [30]
Discharged from the Australian Imperial Force on 30 January 1919; received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal [30]
