He and his wife moved from Geraldton to the Perth suburb of Cottesloe Beach in 1899 [388: 12-Jul-1919]
Four months later his wife returned to Geraldton and said she no longer wished to live with him [388]
His wife sold a house in Geraldton and drew the surrender value of his life insurance policy, which he had transferred to her [388]
He deferred getting a divorce "until his two children were settled in life" [388]
In 1909 he and his brothers were farming in both Carnamah and Three Springs as Maley Bros [86: 15-Apr-1909]
They were farming Carnamah Farm in Carnamah and during mid April 1909 he ploughed 250 acres with an eight horse team [86]
"Old Fred was looking well, and I think his horses were looking even better... considering the rough work they had been doing" [86]
After finishing at Carnamah he went to Three Springs to join his brother Sol in ploughing - he with eight horses and Sol with five [86]
In addition to their ploughing, there were eight men clearing and one carting off tree roots on their farm in Three Springs [86]
"They are hardworking young men, and it is to be hoped they will be recouped by a good harvest" [86]
In 1909 they were also cutting timber in Three Springs and sending it away by railway trucks to be sold for mines [86]

Upon enlistment he was 5 feet 11½ inches tall, weighed 182 pounds and had brown eyes and grisly hair [30]
At the Claremont Military Camp he was appointed to the 28th Reinforcements of the 10th Light Horse on 28 April 1917 [30]

He responded "I cannot. I am leaving tomorrow, but if I return I will do so immediately", which he did in July 1919 [388]
