Douglas Walter JOHNSON

Born 6 January 1941 in Three Springs, Western Australia ^[P31]
Son of Ivan JOHNSON and "Vi" Violet Nasmyth BOWMAN ^[P31]
Resided with his mother, brother and sisters at 13 Caron Street ^[P69] in the Carnamah townsite for some of the year 1941 ^[P31]
He was baptised by Francis J. HALES of the North Midlands Mission in February 1941 ^[84]
In 1941 he was an entrant in the Carnamah District War and Patriotic Fund's Popular Baby Competition ^{[0: image 04004]}
     Due to the fact that his father was serving in the Australian Army he was the "Army Baby" of the competition ^{[0: image 04009]}
     Through the competition, which he won, he inadvertently helped raise £250 for the war effort ^{[0: image 04101]}
Shifted with his mother, brother and sisters from Carnamah to 29 Arthur Street in the Perth suburb of Subiaco during 1941 ^[P1]
He was born after his father had gone abroad with the Australian Army and died less than a year after his father was Killed in Action ^[P31]
Died 20 April 1942 in the Perth suburb of Shenton Park; buried at the Karrakatta Cemetery in Perth (Presbyterian, IA, 215) ^[31]
He was a grandson of Midland Railway Company accountant Walter C. JOHNSON and Ready-Made Farm settler John BOWMAN ^[P31]


From The North Midland Times newspaper, Friday 24 April 1942:
Obituary - Late Douglas Johnson
"It came as a profound shock to the residents of the Carnamah district on Monday morning to learn that Douglas, the small son of Mrs. Violet Johnson, of Subiaco, and the late Captain Ivan Johnson, of Carnamah, had been claimed by the Grim Reaper. Death, it is understood, was caused by diphtheria and additional complications. The deceased child, who was born after his father had sailed for overseas, endeared himself to all with whom he came in contact. He was the successful candidate in the Popular Baby Competition conducted at Carnamah last year when £250 was raised in aid of his candidature. The sincere and heartfelt sympathy of the entire district will go out to the bereaved mother and two sisters, Jean and Pam, and one brother, Richard."
