Upon enlistment he was 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighed 124 pounds and had brown eyes, auburn hair and a ruddy complexion [30]
Following brief training he was appointed to the A Company of the Australian Imperial Force's 44th Infantry Battalion [30]
He embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia for active service abroad on the H.M.A.T. A29 Suevic on 6 June 1916 [30]
Disembarked in Plymouth, England on 21 July 1916 and after further training proceeded to France on 25 November 1916 [30]
Private 124 in the Australian Imperial Force's 44th Infantry Battalion in France and Belgium during the First World War [30]
During his service he was hospitalised three times, twice for influenza and once for mumps [30]
He wrote a will on 6 June 1917 leaving all of his estate, should he not survive the war, to his mother Mrs Emma DODD of Arrino [30]
Killed in Action in Belgium on 16 July 1917 and was at Kandahar Farm Cemetery in West-Vlaanderen, Belgium (II, C, Plot 28) [17] [30]
His mother received a fortnightly pension of 40 shillings from the A.I.F., from his war service, from 29 September 1917 [30]
Between 1918 and 1923 his mother received his effects, British War Medal, Memorial Plaque, Memorial Scroll and Victory Medal [30]
His effects consisted of a wallet, diary, cards, photos, metal stamp, pair of scissors, testament, two bag handles and a leather bag [30]
