"President of the Three Springs Agricultural Society since its inception in 1927, chairman of the thriving local co-operative society, and a highly successful farmer, Mr. A. Bastian is an outstanding personality. In the past he was president of the Three Springs branch of the Primary Producers' Association, and also president of the district council. His property - The Oaks - consists of 2,200 acres of which 1,700 acres are cleared. From 300 acres of wheat he hopes to obtain an average of eight bags to the acre. Mr. Bastian is a rabid supporter of Gresley wheat, a variety bred by Mr. Catton Grasby. At the last Royal Show Mr. Bastian won the first prize in Zone 2 for Gresley. Last season he cropped 283 acres for an average yield of 24½ bushels an acre, principal varieties being Gresley, Major and Canberra. Next season he hoped to crop 500 acres. The Oaks carried 1,700 sheep, and the grown sheep average 9lb. of wool annually."
