Had applied to enlist in 1914 however had been rejected on the grounds his eyesight [30]
Up until enlisting he had served five years with Kalgoorlie's 84th Infantry within which he held the rank of Sergeant [30]
On enlistment was 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighed 134 pounds and had brown hair, brown eyes and a fresh complexion [30]
After training at Blackboy Hill he was appointed on 23 March 1917 to the 10th Reinforcements of the 51st Infantry Battalion [30]
Embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia for active service abroad on the H.M.A.T. A30 Borda on 29 June 1917 [30]
Disembarked in Plymouth, England on 25 August 1917 and after further training proceeded to France on 4 December 1917 [30]
Following his arrival in France he was transferred to the 44th Infantry Battalion in France on 12 December 1917 [30]

During his active service in France he was hospitalised due to illness and after being Wounded in Action on 10 August 1918 [30]
