Enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 28 October 1916 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia [30: item 3055948]
     Described as being 5 feet 5¼ inches tall, weighing 131 pounds with blue eyes, black hair and a fresh complexion [30]
     He gave his next of kin as his mother, Mrs Sarah J. BASTIAN, whose address was 16 Saint Albans Avenue in Perth [30]
     After training at Seymour he was appointed to the 8th Reinforcements of the 2nd Pioneer Battalaion on 11 December 1916 [30]
     He embarked from Melbourne on the A7 Medic on and disembarked in Plymouth, England on 18 February 1917 [30]
     During the voyage of the Medic he suffered from measles and spent 17 days in the ship's hospital [30]
     After further training in England he proceeded overseas to France to join his unit on 22 May 1917 [30]
     Private 3133 in the Australian Imperial Force's 2nd Pioneer Battalion in France and Belgium during the First World War [30]
     He was wounded in action in Belgium on 13 October 1917, suffering a gunshot wound and compound fracture to the skull [30]
     Recorded as dangerously ill on 15 October 1917 and died from his wounds the next day [30]
Died 16 October 1917 at the 2nd Australian General Hospital in Wimereux, France; buried at Wimereux Communal Cemetery [30]
His name appears on the Three Springs Honour Board, which was unveiled on Tuesday 3 June 1919 [9: 6-Jun-1919] [10: 13-Jun-1919]
His British War Medal, Victory Medal, Memorial Plaque, Memorial Scroll and personal effects were all sent to his mother [30]
The personal effects consisted of letters, a photo, electric torch, belt, damaged wrist watch, metal cigarette case, and two badges [30]
Following his death his mother received a pension from the Australian Imperial Force of 40/- per fortnight from 23 December 1917 [30]
Photographs of his grave were sent by the Australian Imperial Force to his mother and his brother Vernon C. BASTIAN [30]
