Birthday Party – Lloyd Bothe Attains Majority
"On Saturday, May 10th last, at the invitation of Mr and Mrs Baxter Bothe of 'Inglewood', Coorow, about 70 guests assembled in the Coorow Hall to take part in a celebrations of the Coming of Age of their younger son, Lloyd Dietrich. The Hall was tastefully decorated with streamers and evergreens. High Tea was commenced ... and the guests sat down to tables loaded with good things. At the conclusion of the Tea the Chairman, Mr Norman Hyde, proposed the Loyal Toast. Mr Hyde then called upon Mr John Read to propose the health of the Guest of Honour. This toast was honoured to the singing of 'For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow' and 'Twenty One Today'. At this stage Mr Bothe presented his son with the traditional 'Key of the Door', and in a well chosen and humorous speech, expressed his pleasure at handing over this symbol of freedom and responsibility to one who had always inspired his complete trust and confidence. Lloyd, amid applause, arose to make his reply, in the course of which he thanked his parents for giving the party for him and those present for their gifts, and the honour that he felt at the presence of so many of his friends. Mr Tim Melvin proposed the toast to Our Host and Hostess, to which Mr Bothe suitably responded. In proposing the toast of Absent Friends, Mr Ken Jones read telegrams received from many well wishers. The toast 'Our Caterers' was proposed by the Host of the evening. Mr Bothe said that he could not let the occasion pass without paying tribute to the high quality of the various dishes and confectionery, and the extremely able and efficient manner in which the work had been carried out. Mrs Wells suitably responded. Mr C. C. Bothe proposed the toast to Our Chairman to which Mr Hyde responded. The remainder of the evening was spent in games and dancing. Winners of the novelty prizes were:- Silhouettes: Misses V. Millard, M. Millard and V. White; Racing Game: Graham Hyde; Honeymoon Game: Miss M. McGilp and Mr Laurie Chappel; Monte Carlo: Miss April Croft and partner; Statue Walk: Miss Isa Wallace and Mr Laurie Chappel. At supper time Mrs Dick Bothe accompanied by Mrs Ken Jones obliged with a song.
