At the age of 18 years he joined the army and served during the Second World War as a Warrant Officer in Africa and India [P468]

In 1949 was working as a Cost Clerk and they were living with their son at 853 Barkerend Road in Bradford, Yorkshire, England [203]
The three of them departed Southampton, England on the steamship Canton on 26 August 1949 bound for Bombay, India [203]
Five years later they departed Ceylon on the steamship Strathaird and arrived in Fremantle, Western Australia on 11 November 1954 [63]
Following their arrival in Western Australia he worked for Elders GM in Onslow, a coastal town in the Pilbara region [P468]
After surviving three cyclones in two years they decided to leave Onslow and shift to Perth [P468]
He then worked in the office of Dunlop Tyres before shifting to Carnamah to become the first lessee of the local Ampol Roadhouse [P468]
He and his wife ran the Ampol Roadhouse on Yarra Street in Carnamah, which at that time was open until midnight each day [P468]
There was a larger dining room which was very popular, especially on Sundays after the football [P468]
His brother-in-law Hector GREEN shifted to Carnamah to help pump the petrol as he was kept busy helping in the kitchen [P468]
Their son Michael helped washing dishes and with the petrol while Sharon SMITH and Nolene SMITH were hired as waitresses [P468]
Along with their son they resided in a house which immediately adjoined the roadhouse - a door going into their lounge room [P468]
He and his wife's friends during their time in Carnamah included storekeeper Stan ASHDOWN and the McCARTHY family [P468]
As the roadhouse in Carnamah was only a lease he decided to buy freehold the roadhouse in Mingenew, which he ran for 16 years [P468]
Upon selling their roadhouse in Mingenew they retired to Geraldton [P468]
After a while they were bored with retirement and opened a restaurant in Geraldton called the Red Candle [P468]
When, a few years later, his health deteriorated, they sold the restaurant and began their second retirement [P468]
