On enlistment he was 5 feet 5¾ inches tall, weighed 137 pounds, and had blue eyes, brown hair and a fresh complexion ^[30]
Embarked from Sydney, New South Wales for active service abroad on the H.M.A.T. A72 Beltana on 25 November 1916 ^[18]
Disembarked in Devonport, England and after training at Codford, Wiltshire, England proceeded to France on  23 January 1918 ^[30]

On 5 November 1929 purchased 2,504 acres of land from Hannah S. S. NEILSON at Five Gums in Western Australia ^[27]
The 2,504 acres was Lot M1774 of Victoria Locations 2021 and 2022 on the west side of the Carnamah-Perenjori Road ^{[27] [62]}
The property had been taken up in 1928 for £1252 (10/- an acre), and had instalments owing to the Midland Railway Company ^[27]
