Obituary - Death of Mr. John Tucker
"The death occurred on Friday of last week of Mr. John Tucker who was for many years headmaster at Thomas street State school, Subiaco. He was one of the founders of the Young Australia League and was prominently connected with the work of the Methodist Church. He was 75 years of age last week. The late Mr. Tucker was born in Victoria and was educated in South Australia where he joined the Education Department as a young man. In 1901 he came to this State to join the Education Department as headmaster of the Lake View School. In 1904 he was transferred to Thomas street School and remained there until his retirement in 1928, when he had completed 50 years' unbroken record as a teacher. Always keenly interested in Australian football, the late Mr. Tucker did a great deal of work in promoting the game in the State schools and in recognition of his efforts he was made an honorary life member of the West Australian National Football League. Until a few weeks ago he regularly attended the big football matches in Perth. In 1906 Mr. Tucker, the late Mr. A. R. Hocking and Mr. J. J. Simons formed the Young Australia Football League. From this organisation the Young Australia League was later formed and Mr. Tucker was first president of the Y.A.L., holding that office for five years. In 1924 Mr. Tucker went to Europe as an officer of the Y.A.L. and was received by King George V and Queen Mary. Since his retirement from the Education Department he spent practically all his time doing work for the Y.A.L, in the different States his last job being in Queensland two years ago. The late Mr. Tucker was prominent in Methodist Church circles in this State, being a lay preacher for a number of years. He also attended a number of triennial Methodist conferences in different States. The late Mr. Tucker is survived by a widow and three sons, including Mr. A. P. Tucker, of Carnamah."
