From The Irwin Index newspaper, Saturday 10 September 1938:
Obituary - Death of Mr A. I. Broad - Funeral at Karrakatta
"A wave of genuine regret swept through the Three Springs district on Monday morning last with the receipt of the news that Mr Albert Irwin Broad had passed away in Perth at the comparatively early age of 45 years. The deceased gentleman, who had followed farming pursuits at Three Springs for the past twelve years, was widely known in the district and was very highly respected by all sections of the community. He at all times evinced a lively interest in public affairs, and ever since the inception of the Three Springs Road Board he has represented the ratepayers of the Womarden Ward. He was also prominently associated with the Three Springs Agricultural Society. The late Mr Broad was a returned solder and a valuable member of the Three Springs-Arrino Sub-Branch of the R.S.L. having served in the war with the 51st Battalion of the Australian Imperial Forces. Born at Mingenew, he was the third son of Mr and Mrs E. Broad sen, two of the pioneers of the Mingenew district, and he is survived by a widow and two young sons, for whom the deepest sympathy has been expressed right throughout the district. The deceased gentleman had been in ill health for some time past, and although every effort was made on his behalf from a medical standpoint his death was not altogether unexpected. The esteem in which the late Mr Broad was held was abundantly exemplified on Tuesday afternoon last, when his remains were laid to rest in the Anglican portion of the Karrakatta Cemetery, the service at the graveside being conducted by a former rector of Three Springs in the person of the Rev. E. G. Jaquet. Many residents of the district paid a last tribute by making a special journey to Perth for the funeral. These included the chairman and secretary of the Three Springs Road Board and members of the Three Springs-Arrino Sub-Branch of the R.S.L. and other public bodies. The chief mourners were Messrs C. E. Broad, E. L. Broad, F. H. Broad and J. O. Broad (brothers), Miss N. Broad (niece) and Mr C. McDonald (brother-in-law), the pall bearers being Messrs C. F. Thomas, E. Hunt, F. Connaughton and W. J. Turner (Three Springs Road Board), and O. S. Sowerby, A. Mortimer, A. R. Strutton and M. Williamson (Three Springs-Arrino Sub-Branch of the R.S.L.). Amongst others present at the graveside were Messrs W. Patrick M.L.A., H. Taplin (Midland Railway Company), S. M. Wreford (manager of the National Bank in Perth), R. Swirte (Shell Oil Company), Frank Laverack, C. H. Hope, E. K. Byrne, W. G. Jordan (Three Springs Road Board), W. D. S. Smith, P. G. Morgan, J. H. C. Haworth, Howard Smith, H. W. Weir, K. Whitlock, M. G. Hope, H. Parker, M. M. Wilson, N. P. Hawley, S. C. Gooch, R. P. Hope, I. A. Sackville, G. H. Bickford (secretary of Three Springs Road Board), W. R. Harris, T. J. Berrigan, W. Wilson, K, Watson, W. Fogarty, P. Oliver, G. P. White, K. White, M. K. White, Robbins, Mr and Mrs W. P. Eglou and Mrs Marsh. A large number of floral tributes were laid upon the grave."
